If you didn’t already get a whiff of what Refinery29 is steppin’ in, then I’ve got something to share – Silverlake Junction is a fine place to spend your time shopping, and this weekend, the stores are revving up their sales and banning together for a blowout to span several blocks of the charming neighborhood. Mas Boutique, Sew LA, Mercado and more are expected to shell out clothing from $25 and up. From the Mas Boutique sidewalk sale, take a trip to Space 15 Twenty for shoes + shoes + shoes + bags, the new store housed next to Urban Outfitters, selling high-end favorites including Jeffrey Campbell, seychelles, Marais, Dolce Vita and Dr. Martens. Minx nail makeovers and food from the Green Truck are expected at 7pm tonight to usher in a good vibe. After you’ve re-vamped your wardrobe, take your old stuff to the Feature and Footcandy Clothing Drive Sale to help women in need of business attire. Neighboring boutiques Feature and Footcandy will offer a $20 dollar in-store discount for each item you bring in for the drive – which should consist of “up to 3 pieces of professional women’s clothes— suits, jackets, skirts, shoes, etc.”
Finally, since you’ll be sittin’ pretty, take in the view at the Temperley London Bridal Event and grab on to the Heist Repeat Offender Discount before it expires.

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND! Find those sales here.

I’m not sure what to say, except that I was pretty sure the arc on Boy Bands had finally come to the end of its rainbow; Justin ran off with the pot of gold and Lance ran off with the Leprechaun, and we were all over the phenomenon faster than the resurgence of the 80’s shoulder pad. Yet, we have this….

Pissed

23 Jul

HAHAHAHA! This coincidence is ironically amusing. As I stated before, I’ve found a saving grace in Jenna Sauers; but I wasn’t finished reading her stuff…so I went home and read some more. Then I found out she took a snapshot of the L.A. showroom I worked for during the first two years I was out here. Hated it. Loathed the people. Like it says in the bible “bad company corrupts good morals.” Something I once repeated to a sixth grade friend, which is laughable maybe, but a philosophy I’ve firmly believed in once I moved to L.A. and experienced it firsthand through big egos and the capricious absence of any discernable morals; because the only value streaming through showrooms is how best to show buyers a goodtime (the more they buy) and if a girl is good-looking, how best to bed her sooner than later (aforementioned ego) – oh, and lots of gossip aka lie, lie, lie – whatever gets you where you want to go and who you want to click with. So here it is, the entrance to my fucking unawesome whore of an employer – Derelicte.

Can you sense my acrimonious sentiment? Yeah, me neither.

I have absolutely no steam today. Among other things, I have been asked to take a pound of receipts and tape each one to an 8 1/2 x 11″ piece of paper so they can be scanned, type out the name of tenants on a report because the computer has chopped off syllables, make copies, scan said copies and allocate every line item on a stack of invoices an inch thick. I’m pretty sure I’ve gotten enough sleep, but give me hours of endless monotony and you couldn’t bullhorn me into being alert. So, between the “arts and crafts” and an increasing opposition to the trite work I am assigned as the week comes to an end, I’m cooked. Done. Take me out of the oven.

What’s kept my mind from actually being cooked is a girl named Jenna Sauers, whose kiwi roots are close to my heart because of my New Zealand stepmother (you cannot beat that accent). Jenna is a model/writer whose thoughtful and witty prose is fully addictive. Her diverse experience through modeling has taken her from Australia to Los Angeles, and since I’m all about L.A. here, how delighted was I to find this photo of her in full L.A. glory, grabbing a cup o’ Joe at Starbucks at the intersection of Fairfax Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard.

Jenna was recently outed as the authoress behind Jezebel’s popular writer ‘TatianaTheAnonymousModel’ in the featured article I Am The Anonymous Model. My recent fave feature was her essay on committed model Karen Mulder, a modeling industry victim.

MOODS OF NORWAY: FOUND HERE
Photobucket

These guys are trouble. Their line of (among many things) cowboy button-ups, turquoise three piece suits and fuschia underwear was represented by the L.A. showroom I once worked at. Currently, they are in L.A. to attend the opening of their flagship store on Robertson Boulevard. They are hilarious, good humored, goofy and crazy as you’d expect from men who wear pink tuxedos and rainbow socks. In order they are: Peder, Stefan and Simon – who once serenaded me at a party and kept asking if I’d like to go to Norway. Above you’ll find a link for their blog which, if not for the commentary, check out for the photos. There’s always a conspicuous limo, yacht or tractor in the background; usually in blue, pink or gold (their primary colors). In my experience, all their endeavors are excessive, outrageous and extraordinary; if you ever wind up in the middle of the pandemonium, just sit back and enjoy the ride.

The main residence of Nickelodeon is actually in Burbank, which is about a 30 minute drive from the Nickelodeon studios off of Sunset Boulevard, so the only filming going on at the Nickelodeon studios in Hollywood is for live-action comedies, none of which I can name. The network has changed locations a handful of times, which included the removal and relocation of a time-capsule put into the ground in 1992 to be opened in 2042. The capsule is full of items deemed important to children at the time. What was included? A Nintendo game boy and a VHS tape of “Home Alone” (I fully endorse this choice).

Out of the Closet is a thrift store unique to California. Usually a great place to find a second hand item, it’s also an organziation that promulgates HIV testing and supports people around the world that are affected by HIV/AIDS. During this past election, a store in Alaska (also a thrift store) was found to be using the name “Out of the Closet”; they were promptly sued.

Jet Rag: Vintage

Every Sunday, vintage seeking Angelenos can sort through mounds of clothing, each piece priced at $1. Although the store characteristically smells of moth balls and dusty shelves (thus so do the clothes), the price is right for a quick score.

Daily Photo: New Shoes

3 Jun

When I was growing up, I got one pair of shoes about every six months. I wore them until the soles tore open and they smelled like last week’s garbage.   I don’t remember being poor – but this might qualify.    Thus my propensity for a new pair of shiny bright soles.  Slipping into a new pair is stirring.    Images of late nights and garden parties abound, bettered by the heels I will wear to them.   Though a full-on shoe fetish is too exaggerated to describe my current closet and predilections, I find myself with about 20 pairs (not too big a number, not too small).

Today, I face the bus in beautiful black snakeskin Ralph Laurens’. Photobucket

The Sartorialist is MIA in L.A.

19 Mar

It is undoubtedly obvious that L.A. has its own vibe – reinforced by the general makeup of the population, L.A. no doubt is more subversive than most; with styles that span from Emo to Blond Ambition, more often than not counterculture and not involving catwalks and skinny models (only sometimes). I tend to think L.A. is being snubbed by the big players in NY(and L.A. doesn’t make it any better with Lauren Conrad as their biggest headline), as evidenced in the eyes of Andre Leon Talley, as he heaves a big sigh.

L.A. fashion is spawed from all facets of this CA life: the beach, the street, the clubs, etc. All in all, we’ve got style. So I ask, “How can The Sartorialist ignore us so completely over here on the West Coast?” I assume that he works, and that work takes place on the the East Coast (and abroad, note the Delhi flavor) without any thought, glance or sympathy thrown in our direction. Still, I am feeling a mite ignored, and a bit miffed that his beautiful photography doesn’t hold images of the pros over here out on the street everyday. Although, I can forgive him and his ways. His Blog is not one to forget as evidenced by the press he receives on Vogue.com.
