L.A. Dressed Up: The Sartorialist

22 Oct

The Sartorialist, aka Mr. Scott Schulman, will be at The Beverly Center (It’s just a nice mall) on the 8th Floor Terrace (though there’s a conflicting report of the 7th Floor Terrace) tonight from 8-10pm. It would seem you need to RSVP to the event at events@lamag.com and get there early; it’s anticipated to draw a large crowd. If you cannot wait until 8pm, there’s an earlier event at Barneys at 9570 Wilshire Boulevard on the 5th Floor from 5pm-7pm. Barneys is a must RSVP (you can call 310-777-5725). The book will be available at Barney’s and at Traffic in the Beverly Center.

Mr. Monopoly by Alec

22 Oct

Mr. Monopoly seems to be making a comeback. The black and white icon has been popping up around town on electrical boxes and appeared on the famous Banksy wall off Melrose. He has been spotted in Boston but no other news has surfaced. Presumably, the signed ‘Alec’ at the bottom of each composition is the artist, and seems to be following in the footsteps of each tagger that sweeps L.A. anew – Banksy, the first of Los Angeles street artists to completely encompass the city limits with his work, then go global, has set the standard for all those who follow – Mr. Monopoly surely has not made his final stop.

Halloween Arts & Crafts

21 Oct

ChadMichael Morrisette and Mito Aviles are up to their old tricks. Atop their house on Fountain Avenue and Orange Street, lots of blood and several naked mannequins are making a statement. The theme this year seems to be ‘Right to Gay Marriage’ and the macabre scene on display features Carrie Prejean, Miss California, Maggie Gallagher, head of the Institute for Marriage and Public Policy, and a burning Mormon alongside a menacing Glenda the Goodwitch. Though ‘tis the season for devilish fun and ghoulish nightmares, the exhibition is unsettling and one I’m eager to get away from. Given the nature of extreme demonstrations, I assume they intend to attract attention, which usually comes in buckets once Halloween is in full swing; though neighbors haven’t yet drawn the curtains, the spectacle won’t go unnoticed.
Curbed LA lays it out:

“Last October, two guys in West Hollywood hoisted an effigy of then-vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin on their roof, a Halloween decoration that made national news because 1. Palin was shown in a noose. 2. One of the West Hollywood guys had the first name ChadMichael, and all the media outlets managed to spell his name wrong. Well, it’s nearly Halloween again. And two weeks ago, ChadMichael Morrisette and Mito Aviles, who still live at the house on Fountain and Orange, decorated their roof. “The whole theme is the forces of evil of 2009,” according to Morrisette. Actually, the theme is the fight for gay marriage. On the left: Maggie Gallagher, head of the Institute for Marriage and Public Policy; on the right (hanging from the roof), a bloodied and mangled Carrie Prejean aka Miss California.

More about what’s on the roof this year, according to the pair, who work in the window display business: As noted, there’s a mannequin with a photo of Gallager, President of the Institute for Marriage and Public Policy, an organization that opposes gay marriage. She’s also has the word liar written on her stomach. “The reason that she is naked is that we are exposing her lies,” says Morrissette, who calls her a hypocrite for statements he says that she made about educating children about gay marriage.

Glinda, the good witch, is also on the roof, standing next to a Mormon missionary (he’s stuck in a chimney and on fire). Glinda is there to counteract all the evil of the rest of the characters….including Carrie Prejean, the Miss USA 2009 contestant. She’s the gal who said she believed that marriage should be between a man and a woman–and she’s shown chopped in half and bloodied.

Prejean is a “victim of Gallagher’s,” according to Morrissette, because he says her image has been used by the Institute for Marriage and Public Policy. Still, Morrissette said he “doesn’t know how entrenched” Prejean is with Gallagher’s group.

Last year, the Palin decoration didn’t receive much attention until three weeks after it went up. You’ll recall that some neighbors supported the Palin effigy, some people didn’t care, and some people were so embarrassed that they hung sheets in front of house in an attempt to shield the Palin image from passing cars. And then finally, the guys took the mannequin down.

So far, no neighbors have complained this year. ‘Some people have come by, laughed, and taken photos,” said Aviles.

Politics aside, it’s a little unsettling to see naked, bloody, and violent images of women. At least that’s our opinion–and what we told Morrisette this morning. His reply: “Well, it’s Halloween.”

Banksy’s work can be seen in the Blick Art Materials parking garage. Fitting.

K47

20 Oct

Up Laurel Canyon, right off the slim two-way street that snakes up the hills onto Mulholland Drive and towards the Hollywood sign you’ll notice a certain patch of crumbling concrete wall. You’ll notice the wall because of what is usually displayed there: most often its a graffiti artists masterpiece, but at other times, the wall decries societies ills or the philosophy of the local subversive culture. The graffiti lasts only a couple of weeks before it is painted over in black, and as the city’s budget tightens, I think it more likely that the artist paints over the old to create a new canvas, rather than the city using resources to clean up local scribbling. Currently on display from tagger K47 is a back-lit ballerina, and from the looks of it, she’s in mid pose from Swan Lake.

The Sisters

19 Oct

The AIDS walk. Though a fantastic cause on a beautiful Saturday morning, L.A. has a habit of using the most mainstream streets for its protests, fundraisers, marathons and any other event that needs several miles to make its point. However, not all was lost after my Sister and I sat through an hour of 90 degree heat waves in a car with no air-conditioning; we parked and went to the Melrose Trading Post. Just $2 to get in, the flea market is a veritable cornucopia of wares: the expected $5 sunglasses, to worn in Cowboy boots, gilded mirrors, vintage furs, contemporary art, corn dogs and nachos and eclectic furniture. Though my husband deems it “another garbage dump,” this place let us escape the sizeable clusterfuck for hours and I came away with $20 Doc Martens’ and black Wayfarers. Los Anjealous describes it’s melodrama here.

These lovely ladies (so-to-speak) are part of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (aka Sisters Mischif) organization that run/walk in AIDS walks across the nation. There are several factions, each with a blog. Besides the fantastically detailed and obviously engrossing costuming, the group has channeled their efforts into a national movement to seek out support for multiple issues, one of them (as seen above) being AIDS walk participation.

Celebrating Halloween is an art form. Last year, a local man caused a stir when he lit up a decked out display of Obama with a cash blockage up his backside while Palin hung off the chimney in full red suit and heels. I don’t doubt that this year will be any different in terms of making statements for Halloween. After all, it’s a great excuse to honor a centuries old pagan tradition, or if you’re feeling sexy, another reason to put your T and A on display. That’s where Santa Monica Boulevard comes in, or clubzone. Around California, there’s plenty to choose from for a frightful night: Universal Studios, Knottsberry Farm, Disneyland and of course, there’s always miles of pumpkin patches, like Mr. Bones’ Pumpkin Patch; A popular destination for celebrities.

Slowly but surely, the ghosts have moved in, the skeletons crept up out of their crypts and placed their bones about, the pumpkins are smiling and the mangled spiders have grown in size. My neighbors have a case of “Maman”:

I know the pictures have bad exposure, but all I had was a camera phone in 6am light, which is to say no light at all.
